Cor-Ten Façade

Cor-Ten Façade Our bespoke Cor-Ten cladding panels for Cabins_in_the_city are weathering away nicely. We installed these late in 2021 and it is always pleasing with this type of weathering steel to witness the corrosion process as it passes through the different stages before it settles down to a warm dark brown colour. We developed a split-batten type hanging solution in order to omit any visible fixings and raise the panels off the wall to make for a more intriguing surface scape. It was a pleasure in working with David Blaikie Architects and client Innes Miller. This project has won the Scottish Design Award in 2022 and has also been nominated for the Architects Journal Awards 2022 which will be held in November 2022....

Bespoke Stair Cases

Bespoke Stair Cases Sneak Peek – full case study available soon One of the most compelling projects recently comprised of designing, manufacturing and installing two new feature stair cases for two adjacent Edinburgh New Town Mews houses. We set out to push the boundaries in terms of manufacturing and finishing of the steelwork. For the first staircase we wanted to it to be manufactured and finished in blackened mild steel - a process that is fairly well known, however it is less so applied on this scale due to finishing issues. On structures at this scale, it is normally hand applied which can be a very laborious undertaking with a higher chance of failure. In order to ensure consistency, we manufactured custom made steel tanks and used the dipping method - which is normally used on small components such as screws and machine parts. The oxide had to be kept at an...

Bespoke Staircase

Bespoke Staircase We were asked to design, manufacture and install a bespoke stair case for a domestic dwelling. Working closely and in conversation with the clients and Kate Perry Architect we wanted to create a continuous band to serve as the central stringer without any visible fixing points for the treads. The curved stringer detail posed a bit of a challenge as we needed to press a tight radius on 180 degrees return between the stair flights in 10mm plate. The result was well worth the effort as we managed to achieve a seamless transition between the top and bottom floors. The Main Contractor, Robert Reid Joinery and Builders, supplied and fitted the beautifully finished Oak treads and landing boards which are sitting neatly on top of the folded steel support plates.  ...

Johnny Walker Bar

Johnny Walker Bar We were commissioned to manufacture a bullnose shaped copper hood for a Johnnie Walker feature bar in celebration of the company's 200-year anniversary. We were working with Edinburgh based Design Agency Great Brink ltd to come up with a solution for this rather complicated shape. The curved front counter bar sits neatly against the rear bar when not in use and is pulled out for events. The shelfing at the rear comprises of custom turned and milled copper knuckles that interjoin the oak shelfing elements in order to provide the necessary stability. Great cabinet work by the Great Brink joinery team.  ...

St. Marks Church Clerkenwell, London

St. Marks Church Clerkenwell, London In this particular instance we were working closely with the brilliant Zrp Architects in order to realise their vision to create a bespoke and visually striking access ramp leading up to the entrance of the historic church of St.Marks in Clerkenwell, London. The ramp is approx. 12m long and sits on a heavy steel plate framework. The feature handrail segments seamlessly project from the base of the walkway and consist of over 150 individually machined solid aluminium flat bars - these have gone through an anodising process in order to achieve the desired bronze finish.  ...
